Lambda Class shuttles were first designed by Sienar Fleet Systems as a government transport. Eventually a subcontract was awared to Cygnus Spaceworks to produce a much more heavily armed version for military use although Cygnus later started producing lighter armed versions nearly identical to the SFS model.

The Tyderian Shuttle (sometimes referred to as the "Imperial Shuttle") looks much like an inverted Y. The tri-wing assembly and large surface area make it excellent for atmospheric use even though it was designed for space travel. And while the large upper stabilizer is fixed and static, the port and starboard wings raise to a vertical position when landing and vise-versa when taking off. Boarding is made possible by a telescoping ramp that extends from the lower forward fuselage.

It turns out that Emperor Palpatine took a personal liking to the Imperial Shuttle and it is rumored he may have even had one equipped with a cloaking device. A stolen Imperial Shuttle Tydirium was used just before the Battle of Endor to transport General Han Solo and a Rebel strike team to the surface of Endor where they destroyed the shield generator protecting the Death Star II the next day.
