The B-wing was devised by Admiral Ackbar in conjunction with the Verpine hive colonies Slayn & Korpil at Research Station Shantipole. Unfortunately, an Imperial spy was present during the operation and an Imperial trap was laid to capture a B-wing. On the day of the attack, a single B-wing and four X-wings from Blue Squadron were succesfull in securing the evacuation of the two B-wing prototypes, the research staff, and Ackbar himself. The B-wing was mainly designed to take on the Nebulon-B Escort Frigate.

The B-wing is essentialy a flat wing only four meters longer than an X-wing. It contains an incredible amount of firepower. Sixteen proton torpedoes can be stored in the two launchers, one at the end of the main wing and the other just above the engines. Their are also hard points for three ion cannons, one laser cannon, and four auto-blasters. A more popular version (taking advantage of the modular weapons) removes the auto blasters and places all three ion cannons on the cockpit and the three laser cannons at the end of each S-foil. The warhead launchers are then both placed at the same location above the engines.

The B-wing is equipped with an unusual cockpit gyro-stabilization system that allows the cockpit to remain stationary while the rest of the ship rotates around it at 90 degree increments, significantly reducing stresses that result from sudden maneuvers. Unfortunately, this complex system frequently breaks down.

B-wings were produced by Slayn & Korpil, and after being taught by the Verpine, the Rebellion. The Rebels set up a couple of B-wing assembly areas that produced these fighters about a half squadron at a time. During an early battle the B-wing shocked the Empire when a single flight of these fighters took out an entire Nebulon-B Frigate. The Imperial commander of the task force the Frigate was assigned to was so shocked that he dismissed the report as being to unbeleivable.

After The Battle of Hoth, there was a bit of small talk regarding wether or not the B-wing should be replaced by the new H-wing Heavy Assault Fighter by Koensayr. However, the H-wing proved to be to expensive a fighter to produce. B-wings are still a proud server of the New Rebpublic.
